Speed is primarily a matter of 'supple quickness' not 'rigid slowness.' This was one of Mike Austin's favorite sayings. The body and hands must stay loose and whippety.
I teach a kid who weighs 95 lbs at around 5'2" but can still hit the ball 270 yards. We're trying to get to 300 currently. Size and strength are only useful once you reach about 340 and even then I can cite you examples of skinny little guys who are crushing it.
