Today we are following up on our last lesson regarding the grip.
Having an outstanding grip and stance is really the foundation for power and accuracy and cannot be bypassed or shortcutted.
When I teach people privately, most of the time the first few lessons will involved an adjustment or modification to the grip or stance.
The top grip errors I see are 1) hands in too weak of a position (turned too far left on a right handed golfer), 2) gripping too much into the left palm instead of the fingers, 3) using grips that are too big for the golfer’s hands.
I have to issue a stern warning about jumbo grips: The golf industry has you fooled into thinking these are good for arthritic hands, but you will lose all control over the club trying to release it freely. They will also diminish your quickness in my opinion.
Please practice the correct grip everyday for a few minutes just by holding and waggling a club, or on the sofa while watching TV. It needs to fit like a glove so that there are no conscious thoughts about it when stepping up to a tough tee shot!
