I recently called this the “greatest power swing in the world today.”
Speed. Power. Balance. Grace. Fluidity. Arguably the straightest long hitter around.
Just like the Mike Dunaway Sybervision tape from the early 90’s, I bet you would gain speed and distance just watching this on a loop.
Eddie Fernandez is the 2018 Senior Long Drive Champion. You read that right – he’s 50 years old and still swinging 150+ mph. He has recorded ball speed as high as 223 mph. This is as fast as the legendary Jamie Sadlowski at his best.
Could he win the Open division in 2019? Well the top tier is deep these days: Justin James, Tim Burke, Ryan Reisbeck, Maurice Allen, Kyle Berkshire can all bring it it with competitive swings measuring 148 and up.
So if you’re a bit older, you have no excuses. You might not be able to hit hit 400 yards ON THE FLAT CARRY – but you can certainly improve your swing and train for more distance.
Check this out:
While his pivot is not precisely like Mike Austin’s, there is a small lateral slide of the right hip towards the right post in the backswing. His right knee kicks in acting as a forward press, and the left knee comes to the middle as he winds up. It’s a very different move than a rotary hip action like Cameron Champ.
It reminds me of an Austin-ism: My swing is based on leverage; theirs is built on turning your body into a goddamn rubber band.
There is absolutely an unimpeded throw from near the top of the swing. And he practices swinging explosively every day. In fact most of his exercises, in and out of the gym, are done with velocity.
