I teach quite a few senior golfers, most of whom just want to get a little more consistent and have more fun with the game. They’d give a couple of bucks to outdrive their golfing buddies for sure. You come across many different types, some who do it for an afternoon out, others will have custom putter headcovers to protect their clubs. You never know which one you’ll meet.
We all know that our potential for strength and power, even endurance, diminish slowly as we grow older. But since most golfers are far from their potential, there is usually a lot of improvement to be had.
Take my student Walt, who has been coming to me for about 2 years now. His average score was about 105 on local public courses. He’s now down to about an 88 average with a low score of 83.
A big reason? Well he drove the ball about 190 best effort, and had an enormous out to in slice. He couldn’t reach longer holes in regulation, and was often playing from the trees.
The other day he hit a record drive of 267 on Trackman, and is now averaging about 240-250. Most drives he hits now are towering draws.
There were 3 parts to our strategy to gain distance.
First, we worked to increase Walt’s clubhead speed. Walt started out with a maximum of 82 mph, and now averages 90, with his fastest ball swing at 96. His record dry swing is now 102, so we believe there’s more to come.
We did this through my proven speed training system, and by lengthening and widening his backswing. He’s making a much bigger shoulder turn now. He also employs the Austin pivot.
Getting Walt’s backswing longer was no easy feat. He was one of the tightest, stiffest guys you’re bound to encounter, especially in his hips – as pliable as concrete blocks I used to tell him!
Second, we turned his slice into a high draw. This changed his attack angle from downwards to 5 degrees upwards, which is optimal. He learned how to release the clubhead as well, adding ball speed and decreasing his spin rate.
Once the first two tasks were accomplished, Walt needed to adjust his driver. He no longer needed as much loft, because he was swinging much faster and launch the ball higher. We turned it down 1.5 degrees, making his launch and spin perfectly optimal for his speed.
The result is simply majestic. Not only is Walt swinging faster, but he’s hitting an incredibly optimal ball:
You just can’t do it any better than this! 267 yards out of only 92.6 mph of clubhead speed! Here is the Trackman chart for optimization:
At 90 mph, the maximum hit possible is 259 yards. Walt literally had a perfect score.
You can see the incredible results come not only from increasing clubhead speed, but increasing efficiency, and making sure your equipment fits your swing. The perfect fit may change as your swing gets better.
We’re now working on cracking the 280 barrier and improving Walt’s putting so that he can make his first par 5 eagle, and break 80 at his home course.
You can teach an old dog new tricks, it just takes a bit longer than a young pup.

What lesson shows you how to make a shoulder turn? I have a six month membership and cannot find instruction on the shoulders?
