There’s a lot of guys on my list of great power swings – Sadlowski, Zuback, David Mobley, Eddie Fernandez. But arguably, Mike Dunaway could be on top.
Dunaway was Mike Austin’s most notable pupil, and founder of the 350 Club, back when 350 yard drives were a really big deal. In the 80’s, the National Long Drive (as it was called back then) would usually be won with a drive of about 340.
Keep in mind that back then the driving distance leaders on tour were only around 275-280. These were the days of persimmon and steel shafts, which were much heavier.
What makes a great power golf swing in my opinion? Clubhead speed for sure. But additionally, you need balance, fluidity, smoothness, and effortlessness. Most of all the greatest power swings are also ACCURATE.
While Dunaway never won the big one, he was straight and consistent enough to catch the eye of the editors at Golf Magazine one day on the Sawgrass driving range. They had never seen a golfer hit it so far without looking like a brute.
Watch the video over and over again and absorb the rhythm and timing, the speed and balance. It will surely help your swing!
