Lesson 3: The Right Hand Grip

Once the left hand goes on correctly, the right hand almost wants to complement it and fit into the right position.

Wrapping the fingers around the grip almost feels like picking up a pail of water by the handle.

Jerry and I do not recommend using an interlocking grip as it curtails the range of motion of the wrists and therefore limits your distance potential.  I have found my students with bigger hands can occasionally get away with interlocking but 90% of golfers will never develop power with this style.  We do encourage you, especially if you are a beginner, to try the ten fingered grip (which just means no intermingling of the fingers).  Overlapping is fine.

We like the thumb placed at about 11 on the clock with the crease or V running between the ear and right shoulder.

Again, practice the grip daily, even if for just a couple of minutes.  There are a lot of details here that can be overlooked – and you don’t want to be thinking about your grip when you go to play.  It needs to be automatic.  You can simply hold the club and move it around while sitting on the sofa.
